Allotment petitioners lose funding fight

A PETITION to secure an allotment site which was subject to a break-in earlier this year has been rejected by Hillingdon Council.

The works to West Drayton Cemetery Allotment site, Rowlheys Place, West Drayton, would have cost £10,000.

Allotment holders had requested that 100 metres of two metre high fencing be built between the allotment garden and the cemetery.

However they were told that the general infrastructure at the cemetery was 'good' and there is already two metre high fencing on the Harmondsworth Road boundary.

The council also argued that the site had benefited from investment in the past, and on this basis it would be unlikely to receive any future works in this instance.

However, councillors did agree to look at the possibilities of finding other funding sources to address the plot holders concerns.

The petition was lodged as a response to a break in at the site on May 29, where plot holders had personal items of property stolen, including horticultural machinery.
