Mill Road couple fell victim to Post Office scam

post off.jpgONE of the many victims of Sameer Tateri's Post Office scam has come forward to tell their story.

Peter Sibley, 60, of Mill Road, West Drayton, was one of many readers shocked to discover the former Station Road postmaster had been sent to jail for fraud last week.

He was convicted of stealing hundreds of pounds at a time from elderly customers, including one case where he took £20,000 from a blind 81 year-old.

After a series of mysterious financial mishaps Peter and wife Glynn had long suspected something untoward was connected with the Post Office but could not put their finger on it.

Glynn Sibley, 56, said: "My husband suffered a stroke six years ago and claims DLA & Incapacity Benefit which he used to collect at the above Post Office.

"Whenever I was with him the money was always correct, but if he went there on his own, the money was always £20 to £25 short.

"He couldn't remember where it went and at first I thought he had spent it at the shops, but he had nothing with him to show for it.

"It happened so many times I was suspicious that something was going on in the post office, but had no proof."

Mrs Sibley said that Mr Tateri had actually initiated their interest in opening a Post Office account.

"It is obvious now why he wanted this, as it meant it was easier for him to get to our money.

"Mr Tateri was always so friendly and helpful my husband wouldn't hear me say anything bad about him.

I think anyone who steals from old and vulnerable people, are despicable and I hope he has to pay every penny back."

Peter Sibley said: "He always seemed like a nice man, but what he did is so wrong and I am angry he could do such a thing."

Mr Tateri gave his address to the court as Savay Close, Denham, but it actually appears he lived for a while during his work at the Post Office in Blossom Way, West Drayton.

Sameer Tateri faces a court date in October where he faces having his assets seized if he is unable to pay back the money he stole.
