Wilkinson's to open in Yiewsley- as more council investment is welcomed
A PLEDGE from Hillingdon Council to focus on town centres around the borough, including Yiewsley and West Drayton, has been welcomed.
The town centres of West Drayton and Yiewsley are set to be the first to benefit from investment from TfL.
A sum of £1.8 million has been provided to improve central parts of the towns. A lit-up arc is planned for the Colham Bridge in Yiewsley, while a colourful redevelopment of the Network Rail owned bridge in Station Road, West Drayton is also planned.
The area is also set to benefit from Crossrail, with housing developments already springing up, and a new Tesco superstore has recently opened.
The 775 home Drayton Garden Village on the former National Air Traffic Control Site in Porters Way is the biggest single development in the area.
The council has also recently got tougher on takeaways, which residents feel over dominate the town centres. Earlier this year permission for another was denied, and KFC in Yiewsley High Street was last month refused permission to expand.
A West Drayton to Uxbridge cycling hub has also been planned as a result of a £309,000 grant from TfL.
A deal has also recently been struck to open a Wilkinson's store on the site of the former Tesco Metro in Fairfield Road, Yiewsley.
John Davies, chair of the Yiewsley and West Drayton Action Group, said: "The Wilkinson's will be good for the area.
"When the new development where the old Woolworth's used to be is completed, there will also be space for two or three units. A Marks & Spencer Simply Food store would be nice.
"The Transport for London money is secure, hopefully work will start in September, we had a meeting about it just last week.
"One problem is the care home which was approved this year, got put up for sale by the developer two days later, so there is no progress on that site.
"The approach to focus on other town centres is to be welcomed, we need a professional, with contacts, to look at getting the best for the town out of Crossrail.
"It will depend how big the team is, whether it is successful, and how widely spread they are."
Jales Tippell, Head of Transportation and Planning Policy, said: "Until now our emphasis has been on Uxbridge town centre and this has worked very well.
"Over the next three years our focus will shift to carrying out various improvements to Hillingdon's other town centres."

what about a planning for another runway for heathrow???? apparently current government changed the plans and is not gonna happen any more... is it the final decision no matter who will be "in charge" within few years??? would be great if someone can give some fresh info about... thx
Meme - thank you for your comment.
The situation with the third runway is that both the coalition government and Labour are now opposed to it. Labour formally announced its opposition two weeks ago.
The government is working on an aviation strategy, which it expects to deliver in the spring. Some people fear a third Heathrow runway may come back on to the agenda because of the intractable problem of airport capacity in the south-east of the UK.

Of course, the spectre of High Speed Two is now the biggest threat to our borough, and you can keep up with all the latest developments in that particular issue at www.uxbridgegazette.co.uk/hs2
