Cash boost for town centre improvement scheme
ANOTHER cash boost for West Drayton and Yiewsley town centres will go towards reducing traffic congestion.
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has earmarked £966,000 to be spent on transport improvements, as part of the ongoing improvement scheme in the area.
It will be ploughed into reducing traffic congestion, improving bus flow and opening up pedestrian and cycle routes.
Earlier this year a sum of £1.8 million was pledged by Transport for London (TfL) for improvement works designed to make shopping in the area a nicer experience.
It will fund a lit-up arc for the Colham Bridge in Yiewsley, while a colourful redevelopment of the Network Rail owned bridge in Station Road, West Drayton, is also planned.
A West Drayton to Uxbridge cycling hub has also been planned as a result of a £309,000 grant from the transport body.
The latest TfL cash is part of £4million being given to the borough for transport improvements.
John Davies, chairman of the Yiewsley and West Drayton Town Centre Action Group, said: "We are already seeing a number of improvements under way.
"It will be interesting to see how they choose to spend this money. It's very positive."
Mike Langan, of Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce, said West Drayton and Yiewsley were areas very much in need of the extra funding.
He said: "They have suffered from the opening of the Tesco out of town store. All the traders are struggling.
"This money will go towards improving the ambience in the area. It will help to give the area a lift and make it a nicer experience for shoppers.
"What the area still needs though, as do many town centres across the borough, is increased footfall."
