DCO_NLR_north1.jpgA VIOLENT and prolific burglar who assaulted a homeowner with an iron bar has been jailed for 11 and a half years.

Aaron North, 22, of West Road, West Drayton, was sentenced at Harrow Crown Court on Friday to one of the longest jail sentences doled out to any borough burglar in recent years.

North had denied aggravated burglary in Grange Way, Iver, in November 2010.

Along with his accomplice Reece Owen, 23, of Barra Hall Way, Hayes, he broke into the house but was confronted by one of the occupants.

The occupant was struck with an iron bar and North and Reece fled the scene, taking a laptop computer but leaving a screwdriver behind.

North's DNA was later discovered on the screwdriver, a vital piece of evidence leading to his conviction.

Then on January 19 last year, the occupants of a house in Bellclose Road, West Drayton, were awoken by intruders attempting to take their car using keys stolen from the house.

The burglars fled on foot, and again a screwdriver carrying North's DNA was left behind.

On the same night North was more successful during a second burglary, stealing a £15,000 Mercedes from a house in Park Avenue, West Drayton.

Police found he had gained entry to the house through a uPVC window using a screwdriver.

Hillingdon Police and Thames Valley Police joined forces and North was arrested. He first appeared in court last February.

His sentence last week for two counts of burglary and one of aggravated burglary.

Owen was jailed last year for two years and five months.

Last week, the Home Office announced new sentencing guidelines for burglars based on the effect on the victim and if the criminal was armed.

A maximum penalty of 13 years in jail is available to judges.
